Our New Community: Channahon – Historical Beginnings – “The Meeting of the Waters”

Channahon, Illinois is a village located in the Grundy and Will counties with a population of 12,700. It is located at the convergence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, where they form the Illinois River. The Illinois and Michigan Canal (including several locks) run through most of the village, where it is fed by the water of the DuPage River.



Originally, the Potawatomie Indians inhabited this area naming it Channanon which means “meeting of the waters”.


In 1962, the area was incorporated as the village of Channahon.  Major development began in the 1970’s as the village’s proximity to interstate highways resulted in industrial growth with numerous refineries and production plants.  The industrial growth was followed by many support businesses such as freight hauling companies and residential development.


Area Interests:

  • Channahon Park District offers an array of opportunities for recreation and self-development.
  • The Arrowhead Community Center offers racquetball courts, a fitness center and a pre-school program.
